[1] Cadogan Place 27 June 1826
My Dear Sir
I am encouraged by Experience of your Kindness to ask Advice & Aid from You relative to the following Project.
I am advised to try the Effort of a Journey to Switzerland &
of some Stay there for Health.. I am advised for that Object to go by Water as much as possible –
With this View I sh
d go to Rotterdam by Steam & after showing Holland to my Family endeavour to catch at Nimeguen the Steam Boat to Cologne. There my Questions to You begin.
Could I hire a good Boat with suffi
[2]cient Means of Protection against Sun & Rain from Cologne to Ments or Mannheim – For what Sum in English Money & in how many Days? Can You procure me Answers to the same Questions from Ments or Mannheim to Basle or Schaffhausen.
I should like to see & show
Heidelberg Worms, Speier Strasburg &nd or any thing else not requiring much Time Land Journey or Expense –
What is the Distance from
Basle to Coppett? – & from Schaffhausen by Zurich the Right Lucern & Berne [3] to Coppett
My Decision would much depend on the most worthy Information which I should receive about Time Expense & Fatigue, My Party might consist only of
Ly M & my Daughter – or it might contain 2 perhaps 3 more – in both Cases 1 male probably 1 female servant such Estimates of Expense as you can form on probable Conjecture for economical English Travellers would be very acceptable – From the first Point in Switz whether Basle or [4] Schaffhausen where Water Conveyance must end My Health wd require slow Journies not exceeding 25 English Miles a day which is I suppose about the Rate of a Voiturier: A speedy Answer will much increase the Value of the Information. I write about nothing else because I hope to see you at Bonn
I am My Dear M

Yours ever most truly
