My dear Sir
On my return from the Cape of Good Hope I had the satisfaction to receive your letter of 24
th Sept. last: for which I beg You to accept my thanks. I should have had the pleasure of writing to you immediately on my arrival, but my own arrangements & movements have been since a little uncertain: as I have occasion to pay a visit to Scotland. I meditated proceeding thither next week: but as [2] I do not put myself in His Majestyʼs train, who is going thither at the very time, my voyage is now postponed till near the end of the month. I expect to be back by the middle of next. We English as you justly, observe are very moveable and little relunctant to undertake voyages long or short, by wind or by steam.
I hope you will persist in your good intentions of visiting England this autumn
The Asiatic society have done themselves the honor of electing you an Honorary Member. When I have the [3] pleasure of seeing you I will communicate some observations which have appeared on your criticisms upon the labors of our fellow-members.
A fourteenth Volume of
Asiatic Researches is coming home, & a fifteenth is in the press. There is an interesting drama (translated by Mr Wilson) awaiting publication
I am Dear Sir with great respect. Yours very Obe
dly
