[1] London April 22. 1819
Sir,
You will I fear think me very negligent in replying to your letter of the 22
d Jany; but I deferred my reply in the expectation of shortly being able to obtain more of the Oriental Works which you had desired to be procured. We have now collected all that London can at present produce, and they were dispatched a few days ago to Paris, under Cover to the Baron de Stael, who will doubtless forward them safely. The annexed list will inform you what we have been able to procure, with their prices. The bill was presented, according to your desire, to Messrs. Tottié & Compton; but it appears they are not at present in condition to discharge it: we therefore leave it till we receive your further orders.
It will give me the greatest pleasure at all times to execute any commissions for you in
this metropolis; or to afford my humble services in any way in which you may have occasion to command them.
Some time ago you mentioned, Sir, that if a
new edition of Mr Black’s translation of your work on Dramatic Literature should be called for, you would furnish some hints for the correction and improvement of the translation.
I have the pleasure to say that the edition which we
[2] printed is nearly exhausted; and though the demand now is not very considerable, we should not hesitate to speculate on a reprint if you could furnish us with any additional matter on the subject. I thought I would take the liberty of asking this question, as it was probable you may not have enlarged so fully on the English Drama, as you would have done had your work been originally intended for England.
I shall be extremely gratified to hear from you on this subject, and happy to avail myself of any suggestions you may make, and any materials you may think proper to contribute for a new edition.
I have the honor to remain
Sir
Your faithful & obed
