I should hardly know how to excuse myself, if I had not <persName key="2566">Mr Lassen’s</persName> testimony to appeal to, that I have been busy in </hi><hi rend="family:Courier;underline:1">your cause</hi><hi rend="family:Courier">, for I know you consider the advancement of Sanscrit literature in that light. Every moment I have been able to snatch from pressing avocations &amp; Business have been devoted to the <name key="14578" type="work">Mímánsá</name>. I have sacrificed the usual summer excursions to it, and have been nearly all the summer in town; and I have still many months hard work in prospect before I can arrange the plan on which I shall give to the public a summary or indeed any account of that <name key="12023" type="work">branch of Hindu philosophy</name>. <lb/><milestone unit="start" n="44438"/>[2]</hi><note type="Notiz_zur_Transkription"><title>Paginierung des Editors</title></note><milestone unit="end" n="44438"/><hi rend="family:Courier"> What may be deemed philosophical in the <name key="14578" type="work">Mímánsá</name>, </hi><hi rend="family:Courier;overstrike:1">in the Mimansa</hi><hi rend="family:Courier"> is so mixed up with disquisitions on religious ceremonies, that it is necessary to go completely through both, before any account can be given of either: &amp; the disquisitions on ceremonies as necessarily lead to reading through half the </hi><name key="3870" type="work"><hi rend="family:Courier;underline:1">Védas</hi></name><hi rend="family:Courier">, and this draws attention to all the obsolete words and technical religious terms which abound in them. To turn my labor to the best account, I am seriously considering of taking up two or three great undertakings at the same time: a <name key="19255" type="work">series of dissertations on religious ceremonies of the Hindus</name>, completing what I began in the <name key="3236" type="periodical"><placeName key="2552">Calcutta</placeName> Asiatic Researches</name>; my dissertation on the </hi><hi rend="family:Courier;underline:1">Mímánsá</hi><hi rend="family:Courier">, of course; a glossary of obsolete and technical terms; and, were I a younger man, I should be disposed to resume my original plan of <name key="3413" type="work">dictionary</name> and <name key="9942" type="work">grammar</name>; vizt an etymological dictionary, and a grammar found<milestone unit="start" n="46363"/>[ed]</hi><note type="Notiz_zur_Transkription"><title>Textverlust durch Blattausriss</title></note><milestone unit="end" n="46363"/><hi rend="family:Courier"> </hi><hi rend="family:Courier;offset:4">on</hi><hi rend="family:Courier"> the rules of <persName key="6208">Pánini</persName>. The recent death of <persName key="14581">Capt Fell</persName>, from whom I hoped the completion of the latter task, has put it into my thoughts. I hesitate, because I hardly could expect to finish the task; &amp; this consideration may probably deter me from setting seriously about it.
