Seine Rede „The Trial of Jean Peltier for Libel against Napoleon Buonaparte“ (1803) wurde von Mme de Staël-Holstein ins Französische übersetzt. Seit 1804 war Mackintosh als Stadtrichter Bombays und Richter des Marineministeriums tätig. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach England 1812 trat er in das Parlament ein. Hier setzte er sich erfolgreich für die Überarbeitung des Strafrechts ein. Mackintosh unterrichtete später Jura und Politik am East India College in Haileybury. I know no book so generally read & followed or opposed as Your Lectures on Dramatic Poetry. You are become our National Critic. – Are you engaged in any new literary Undertaking? I am now so incessantly employed on my history that I had time only to glance at Your Brotherʼs Lectures on Literary History in which I was scandalized at seeing him commend Hume for [2] his Toryism – Offer my best remembrances to him when you write to him –
