Neben seiner Arbeit als Jurist engagierte sich Hayward im literarischen Leben Londons. Zu seinen Gegnern in der London Debating Society gehörten John Arthur Roebuck und John Stuart Mill. Durch die Mitarbeit am „Law Magazine“ stand er im kollegialen Austausch mit englischen Rechtsphilosophen, aber auch mit deutschen Gelehrten wie dem Juristen Friedrich Carl Savigny. Auch für die Zeitschriften „New Monthly“, „The Foreign Quarterly“, „The Quarterly Review“ und „The Edinburgh Review“ verfasste Hayward Texte. 1833 übersetzte er Goethes „Faust“. Die Arbeit fand nicht nur im angelsächsischen Raum Anerkennung. Bei einer Reise zur zweiten Auflage der Übersetzung im Jahr 1834 lernte er Ludwig Tieck, Adelbert von Chamisso, Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué und Karl August Varnhagen von Ense kennen. Als Intellektueller war er Mitglied im angesehenen Athenaeum Club. Bei einer Reise zur zweiten Auflage der Übersetzung im Jahr 1834 lernte er Ludwig Tieck, Adelbert von Chamisso, Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué und Karl August Varnhagen von Ense kennen. Die Arbeit fand nicht nur im angelsächsischen Raum Anerkennung. Bei einer Reise zur zweiten Auflage der Übersetzung im Jahr 1834 lernte er Ludwig Tieck, Adelbert von Chamisso, Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué und Karl August Varnhagen von Ense kennen. Als Intellektueller war er Mitglied im angesehenen Athenaeum Club.
