Von 1817 bis 1843 war er Herausgeber des „Morning Chronicle“. Unter seiner Leitung wurde die Zeitschrift bekannt für ihre investigative Berichterstattung. Blacks besonderes Anliegen war das Recht auf Pressefreiheit. Als Anhänger einer radikalen Gesetzesreform war er zudem ein Befürworter des neuen Armengesetzes, das 1834 in England erlassen wurde. Having learnd from my friend Mr Hill, who had the good fortune to pass an Evening in your Company in the Summer of 1817, that you were satisfied with my Translation of your Lectures on Dramatic Poetry, and that you would be happy to communicate to me several particulars which might be of use to the work in case it should go through a second Edition, I take the liberty of introducing to you my friend Mr Murray a Writer in the Times Newspaper who intends making the Tour of the Rhine, to whom any materials that you may think of advantage to me, may be confidentially given – – The first Edition is now nearly disposed of, and I am in hopes that a Second Edition may soon be required – May I be allowed to observe to you that your work has not merely given to the English a high idea of your [2] own Talents, and genius, but has in a great measure reconciled it to German Literature, which from the productions of Kotzebue & a number of others of the same stamp, had sunk very low in our Estimation – We are yet very imperfectly acquainted with German Literature, but justice will at length be done to your nation –
