Dear Sir,
Although I have not enjoyed the privilege of frequenting Your Society, yet being not altogether unknown to you, I venture to hope that I may be allowed the honour of introducing to your acquaintance my country woman and friend Miss Carpenter, a Young Lady of the greatest worth & highest intellectual endowments, a daughter of the late Dr Carpenter, who was celebrated as a [2] writer on mental Philosophy and on Controversial Theology and was a man universally esteemed for his high moral qualities. Miss Carpenter is about to pay a short visit to some parts of Germany and is naturally desirous of seeing whatever is most worthy of admiration. May I venture to facilitate her attainment of this wish in one signal intance.
Allow me to take this opportunity of thanking you [3] for the honour you have done me on sending me the preface to the German translation of a certain book. I can only wish that the work had been more worthy of the προμαντευς, who condescends to usher it with the German world.
