My dear Sir,
I had hoped to have been able to forward to you the accompanying packet by my friend Captn. Washington, who went to Bonn a few weeks ago with his family who, I believe are still there: I unfortunately missed the opportunity, and must trust to another combinaison to forward the packet to you now. You will pardon me the liberty I have taken to request your kind acceptance of a copy of Each of my three letters to the Earl of Elgin [2] Elgin on the importance of continuing our Encouragement of Greek Architecture in preference to the Gothic – and I will thank you to present the other copies in my name to the public Library of your University.
I wrote to you some months ago on the Subject of a Young Relative of Mine, whom his parents wished to place at Bonn for the [3] Completion of his Education: Circumstances have since changed, and his destination is altered – I have therefore to offer you my humblest apologies for the trouble I may have occasioned you.
I do not know whether Mrs. Washington, who is now at Bonn, has the honor of your acquaintance, you would not fail to find [4] in her a most agreable addition to your Social Circle.
Her husband, the Captain, an officer in the British Navy, is the learned and indefatigable Secretary of the Royal Geographical Society in this City.
Hoping for your pardon for this Intrusion I have the honor to be Dear Sir,
