Ab 1786 fand er eine Anstellung als Steuerbeamter in Tirhut und Nator. In den folgenden achtzehn Jahren, die er in Indien verbrachte, arbeitete Colebrooke als Diplomat und Jurist der East India Company und wirkte ab 1805 als oberster Richter des Appellationsgerichts in Kalkutta. Außerdem war er ab 1801 als Professor für Sanskrit am Fort William College in Kalkutta tätig. Er verfasste eine erste Grammatik des Sanskrit, die 1805 erschien. 1814 kehrte er nach England zurück. Hier wirkte er 1823 als Mitbegründer der Asiatic Society of Great Britain, publizierte zahlreiche Aufsätze über das Rechtssystem der Hindu, die indische Literatur, aber auch über die Botanik, Mathematik sowie das Maß- und Münzsystem Indiens. Er stellte der Bibliothek der East India Company seine Sammlung Indischer Handschriften zur Verfügung. Ab 1786 fand er eine Anstellung als Steuerbeamter in Tirhut und Nator. In den folgenden achtzehn Jahren, die er in Indien verbrachte, arbeitete Colebrooke als Diplomat und Jurist der East India Company und wirkte ab 1805 als oberster Richter des Appellationsgerichts in Kalkutta. Außerdem war er ab 1801 als Professor für Sanskrit am Fort William College in Kalkutta tätig. Er verfasste eine erste Grammatik des Sanskrit, die 1805 erschien. 1814 kehrte er nach England zurück. Hier wirkte er 1823 als Mitbegründer der Asiatic Society of Great Britain, publizierte zahlreiche Aufsätze über das Rechtssystem der Hindu, die indische Literatur, aber auch über die Botanik, Mathematik sowie das Maß- und Münzsystem Indiens. Er stellte der Bibliothek der East India Company seine Sammlung Indischer Handschriften zur Verfügung. Außerdem war er ab 1801 als Professor für Sanskrit am Fort William College in Kalkutta tätig. Er verfasste eine erste Grammatik des Sanskrit, die 1805 erschien. 1814 kehrte er nach England zurück. Hier wirkte er 1823 als Mitbegründer der Asiatic Society of Great Britain, publizierte zahlreiche Aufsätze über das Rechtssystem der Hindu, die indische Literatur, aber auch über die Botanik, Mathematik sowie das Maß- und Münzsystem Indiens. Er stellte der Bibliothek der East India Company seine Sammlung Indischer Handschriften zur Verfügung. My dear Sir
I have yet to thank you for your letter received last month by the hands of Sir Alexander Johnston I had the satisfaction, when meeting him the beginning of this week to learn from him, that he had recently heard from you & from his son, giving gratifying accounts of mine It is indeed very satisfactory to hear that he goes on so well & that you think so favorably of the progress made by him – I shall be glad to find that he manifests a turn for mathematical study, the only branch which you except from those in which he has begun well on advanced creditably.
Immediately on receipt of your letter I instructed my bankers to expect, & pay, the half yearly draft in January instead of Feby. The accounts are quite satisfactory
You will have learnt that we have re-opened our proceedings in the R. Asiatic Society under favourable auspices. There has been an interesting [2] paper on the valley of the Setledge in the Himálaya, which passed through my hands – It will be inserted in the forthcoming fasciculus.
I am sorry to say our friend Dr Noehden is not well – He has had several attacks of illness within the last few months
Shall I request you to tell my son that his brothers are well and are often thinking of him? They hope he does not forget them
