The occasion for it is </hi><persName key="4058"><hi rend="family:Courier">your</hi><hi rend="family:Courier;overstrike:1">s</hi><hi rend="family:Courier"> Sons</hi></persName><hi rend="family:Courier"> last letter to <persName key="2714">Mr. Smith</persName>, which accidentally fell into my hands, he having left the first copy of it </hi><hi rend="family:Courier;overstrike:1">open</hi><hi rend="family:Courier"> lying open in his room.<lb/>I scarce should think it </hi><hi rend="family:Courier;overstrike:1">was to m</hi><hi rend="family:Courier"> necessary to mention any thing about what <persName key="4058">he</persName> writes concerning me, because I may be sure You will not judge against me by his misrepresentation of matters without having made further enquiries. I forgive easily a young man, who likes more to live without a governor than with one. The reason why he thinks so is because I take and from the beginning have taken care to let him </hi><hi rend="family:Courier;underline:1">feel</hi><hi rend="family:Courier"> his dependance as little as possible. What can be obtained by gentle means, I would not use harsh ones to obtain it – friendly advices and admonitions I gave him continually, reproofs only, when it was not to be avoided.<lb/></hi><hi rend="family:Courier;offset:4">I need not be afraid of talking to you about</hi><hi rend="family:Courier"> </hi><hi rend="family:Courier;overstrike:1">You spare not</hi><hi rend="family:Courier"> <persName key="4058">Your sons</persName> failings, Madam – </hi><ref target="fud://5785"><hi rend="family:Courier">You called him extremely indolent</hi></ref><hi rend="family:Courier"> </hi><hi rend="family:Courier;overstrike:1">and</hi><hi rend="family:Courier"> he is so indeed and therefore wants somebody to </hi><hi rend="family:Courier;overstrike:1">exact</hi><hi rend="family:Courier"> excite him to constant occupation.
