The Literary Estate

• The legacy of written materials was purchased from the Königliche Bibliothek Dresden (Dresden Royal Library) in 1873. It comprises approximately 12 running feet, including biographical collections, letters, poems, translations, lectures and academic research. The digital estate inventory of 1981 includes 77 component parts on 181 handwritten pages. A further part of the literary estate, which the Prague Germanist Josef Körner (1888–1950) discovered at Coppet Castle on Lake Geneva in 1929, sections of which he published himself, was acquired by the Saxon State and University Library Dresden (SLUB) at auction from Christie’s London in 1998. Two original crates containing 585 letters written on 2,040 pages were offered for bidding. Schlegel, fleeing incursion by Napoleon, packed and labelled the crates personally only to leave them behind. They have since been part of a private collection. The digital letter registry of 2000 is composed of 49 pages. All original letters from the Dresden literary estate were, after extensive preparation, digitized and are made available in the present digital edition.
