The Exhibition

• The exhibition “Awakening of the Romantic Universe: August Wilhelm Schlegel” (Aufbruch ins romantische Universum: August Wilhlem Schlegel) was hosted by the Frankfurter Goethe-Haus – Freies Deutsches Hochstift from September 6, to November 12, 2017. Subsequently it migrated to the StadtMuseum Bonn (November 29, 2017–April 8, 2018), the Universitätsbibliothek Marburg (May 8, 2018–June 3, 2018) and the Romantikerhaus Jena (June 18, 2018–October 21, 2018).
  The exhibition displays extensive originals unseen until recently – correspondences, manuscripts, pieces of his private East Indian collection, as well as a matrix case containing Sanskrit type developed by Schlegel in Paris, never previously shown pieces from private collections and much more – all of which are to be presented with a multi-media approach. The primary focus is on Schlegel’s intercultural accomplishments, which continuously unfolded at each of his places of residence in Europe and which turned their attentions to a wide variety of themes. The broad spectrum of Schlegel’s complete work comes into view in the exhibition.
  A visualization of Schlegel’s fascinating network of correspondents is rendered by one of the media stations: the interactive network installation makes Schlegel’s network of contacts throughout Europe visual and displays the relocation of his centers of productive work throughout the course of his life. Visitors can actively trace his network of correspondents and read in the original about what, where, when and with whom he held discussions.
  The media station obtains data directly from the DFG project “Digital Edition of the Correspondence of August Wilhelm Schlegel”; developed by Dr. Thomas Burch and Michael Lambertz (Trier Center for Digital Humanities).
