The Nature & Circumstances of
George the Firstʼs Divorce from his Wife the Princess of Zell are very imperfectly stated by English Writers – Though not a Fact of the first Importance I should like to state it accurately. With this View I request Mr Schlegelʼs kind Assistance.
I To procure me any History of
Hanover or other German Book which contains good Informations on that Subject if such Book there be & to procure answers to the following Queries.
II To procure
1 When did the Death of
Konigsmark take Place.
[2] 2. Was the Princess Dorothea imprisoned immediately after his Death
3. Are the Records still extant of the Ecclesiastical Consistory (I am not sure whether of
Hanover or of Zell) which is said to have pronounced Sentence of Divorce in this Case on the 28th December 1694.
4 Was it a Divorce a Vinculo Matrimonii or a Divorce a Mensa et Thoro. –
5 Was any Evidence of Adultery laid before the Consistory & if so what was the Substance of it.
6 Do Persons well skilled in
Hanoverian History think that the Princess was truly or falsely accused.
[3] 7 Was the Konigsmark Family Swedish or German? – If German of what Province?
8. What is known of the subsequent Life of
the Konigsmark who was unduly acquitted in England of the Murder of Mr Thynne? –

and in general I should be curious to learn any particulars of these Parties.
Mackintosh.
P.S. 9 Where was
George the first at the Time of Konigsmarkʼs Death. –
[4] Historical Enquiries
for M
r Schlegel
from Sir Mackintosh.
