Er wuchs in London auf und erhielt Privatunterricht. 1782 reiste er nach Indien, um als Schreiber des Civil Service of Bengal zu arbeiten. Ab 1786 fand er eine Anstellung als Steuerbeamter in Tirhut und Nator. In den folgenden achtzehn Jahren, die er in Indien verbrachte, arbeitete Colebrooke als Diplomat und Jurist der East India Company und wirkte ab 1805 als oberster Richter des Appellationsgerichts in Kalkutta. Außerdem war er ab 1801 als Professor für Sanskrit am Fort William College in Kalkutta tätig. Er verfasste eine erste Grammatik des Sanskrit, die 1805 erschien. 1814 kehrte er nach England zurück. Hier wirkte er 1823 als Mitbegründer der Asiatic Society of Great Britain, publizierte zahlreiche Aufsätze über das Rechtssystem der Hindu, die indische Literatur, aber auch über die Botanik, Mathematik sowie das Maß- und Münzsystem Indiens. Er stellte der Bibliothek der East India Company seine Sammlung Indischer Handschriften zur Verfügung. Your animadversions are well descr..ed. I could never impress upon native correctors of the press, while I was there, the duty of a scrupulously careful revision. They are slovenly with the press, as with manuscripts: which commonly are very incorrect. It was on this account <milestone unit="start" n="27581"/>[2]<note type="Notiz_zur_Transkription"><title>Paginierung des Editors</title></note><milestone unit="end" n="27581"/> my habit to purchase copies which had been much used & studied in preference to ornamented & splendid copies imperfectly corrected.<lb/>No good editions of printed Sanscrit can be expected, witout European superintendance; and I shall be anxious to learn that you succeed in improving the types; & that the learned of Germany, & yourself at their head, enter on the laborious but important task of editing Sanscrit works. </hi><hi rendition="#PRSPreset1">The</hi><hi rend="family:Courier"> Devanagarí types, which are chiefly used in India, are nearly logographic. Te only inconvenience of that plan is the multitude of compartments requisite for the compositorʼs table. The advantages were however considered as counterbalancing the inconvenience. I mean to say that the compound letters are combined in a single type. It is a method which I introduced there.<lb/>I quite concur in opinion with you that Lithography is more suited to the Persian & Arabic literature, than to Sanscrit. I hope to learn that it is adopted in India for Persian, & for characters of which no have been struck.<lb/>What I think most advisable, & as such have recommanded, is, that manuscripts should be prepared with lithographic ink upon transfer-paper, and sent over to be here transformed to stone & printed.<lb/>I feel it difficult to answer your inquiriy concerning the price of manuscripts in India. I would rather advise to await opportunities of buying in England. If copies enough of the Panchatantra can be found for collation, it might be advisable to edit the original work itself. Außerdem war er ab 1801 als Professor für Sanskrit am Fort William College in Kalkutta tätig. Er verfasste eine erste Grammatik des Sanskrit, die 1805 erschien. 1814 kehrte er nach England zurück. Hier wirkte er 1823 als Mitbegründer der Asiatic Society of Great Britain, publizierte zahlreiche Aufsätze über das Rechtssystem der Hindu, die indische Literatur, aber auch über die Botanik, Mathematik sowie das Maß- und Münzsystem Indiens. Er stellte der Bibliothek der East India Company seine Sammlung Indischer Handschriften zur Verfügung. Te only inconvenience of that plan is the multitude of compartments requisite for the compositorʼs table. The advantages were however considered as counterbalancing the inconvenience. I mean to say that the compound letters are combined in a single type. It is a method which I introduced there.<lb/>I quite concur in opinion with you that Lithography is more suited to the Persian & Arabic literature, than to Sanscrit. I hope to learn that it is adopted in India for Persian, & for characters of which no have been struck.<lb/>What I think most advisable, & as such have recommanded, is, that manuscripts should be prepared with lithographic ink upon transfer-paper, and sent over to be here transformed to stone & printed.<lb/>I feel it difficult to answer your inquiriy concerning the price of manuscripts in India. Er wuchs in London auf und erhielt Privatunterricht. 1782 reiste er nach Indien, um als Schreiber des Civil Service of Bengal zu arbeiten. Ab 1786 fand er eine Anstellung als Steuerbeamter in Tirhut und Nator. In den folgenden achtzehn Jahren, die er in Indien verbrachte, arbeitete Colebrooke als Diplomat und Jurist der East India Company und wirkte ab 1805 als oberster Richter des Appellationsgerichts in Kalkutta. Außerdem war er ab 1801 als Professor für Sanskrit am Fort William College in Kalkutta tätig. Er verfasste eine erste Grammatik des Sanskrit, die 1805 erschien. 1814 kehrte er nach England zurück.
