  Henry Thomas Colebrooke war der Sohn des Bankiers Sir George Colebrooke, der im Verwaltungsrat der East India Company tätig war. Er wuchs in London auf und erhielt Privatunterricht. 1782 reiste er nach Indien, um als Schreiber des Civil Service of Bengal zu arbeiten. Ab 1786 fand er eine Anstellung als Steuerbeamter in Tirhut und Nator. In den folgenden achtzehn Jahren, die er in Indien verbrachte, arbeitete Colebrooke als Diplomat und Jurist der East India Company und wirkte ab 1805 als oberster Richter des Appellationsgerichts in Kalkutta.
  Außerdem war er ab 1801 als Professor für Sanskrit am Fort William College in Kalkutta tätig. Er verfasste eine erste Grammatik des Sanskrit, die 1805 erschien. 1814 kehrte er nach England zurück. Hier wirkte er 1823 als Mitbegründer der Asiatic Society of Great Britain, publizierte zahlreiche Aufsätze über das Rechtssystem der Hindu, die indische Literatur, aber auch über die Botanik, Mathematik sowie das Maß- und Münzsystem Indiens. Er stellte der Bibliothek der East India Company seine Sammlung Indischer Handschriften zur Verfügung. Colebrooke gilt als Begründer der Sanskritphilologie.

  AWS schätzte Colebrooke als Indologen. 1823 besuchte AWS Colebrooke in London. John Colebrooke, der Sohn von Henry Thomas, lebte ein Jahr im Bonner Haus Schlegels, um sich auf sein Studium vorzubereiten.

You, who knew him, will appreciate my loss.

  John Henry Colebrooke war der Sohn des Politikers und Indologen Henry Thomas Colebrooke und einer indischen Frau. Er besuchte die renommierte Charterhouse School in Surrey. Von 1824 bis 1826 wurde er in Bonn zusammen mit Patrick Johnston von AWS unterrichtet. Anschließend plante er Rechtwissenschaften in Edinburgh oder Glasgow zu studieren. Im Oktober 1827 nahm er sich in einem Pariser Hotel das Leben.
- Correspondence with August Wilhelm von Schlegel
  AWS unterrichtete und beherbergte den Sohn seines Freund Henry Thomas Colebrooke in Bonn. John Henry Colebrooke hatte ein gutes Verhältnis zu seinem Lehrer und berichtete ihm 1827 von seinen Studienplänen. Eine Vertraute Colebrookes, Augusta Smith, berichtete AWS nach dem tragischen Tode Johns, wie sehr er Schlegel bewundert hatte.

  In London erhielt Horace H. Wilson seine Ausbildung als Arzt im St. Thomas Hospital und war seit 1808 als Chirurg im Dienst der East India Company tätig. In Kalkutta arbeitete er als Sekretär der Asiatic Society, betrieb Studien des Persischen und des Sanskrit und arbeitete in der Folgezeit intensiv in verschiedenen Bereichen der Sanskritstudien, meist unterstützt durch einheimische Gelehrte. Ein Meilenstein war sein Sanskrit-Englisch-Wörterbuch. Wilson wurde als Boden Professor in Oxford der erste Sanskritist an einer englischen Universität.
- Correspondence with August Wilhelm von Schlegel
  AWS war das Sanskrit-Wörterbuch Wilsons bekannt. Er schätzte die Leistungen des britischen Forschers. Wilson dankte im Namen der Asiatic Society AWS für Zusendung seiner indologischen Schriften.
