Sir,
Having repeatedly read, & with increased benefit & satisfaction at every perusal, your fine, & indeed I may truly say, your incomparable work, on Dramatic Literature, I am desirous of signalizing my esteem and admiration, by dedicating, (if not displeasing,) the enclosed Tragedy to one, who has done so much honour to the Genius of England. This Tragedy it is my intention to publish in London next [2] spring; but I shall not put it to press, till I have the honour of hearing from you. It is not impossible, but that you might be pleased to throw out a hint for its Improvement. *I hope you will be pleased to excuse this presumption.
I have taken the Liberty of sending, also, a work written by me, some time since; & beg to assure you, that should you be so kind, as to permit it to occupy a vacant space in your Library, I should be highly gra[3]tified.
It is not my intention to have this Drama performed in London, if I can help it: – but the managers here will give me no pledge or promise, that they will not, after publication; though I have earnestly entreated them to do so: & unfortunately, the Law allows them the option. sic vos non vobis.
