My Dear Sir,
Lady Raffles the widow of our distinguished Countryman Sir Thomas Raffles will I hope for your sake as well as her own, visit the University of Bonn which owes so much of its celebrity to you. Mrs Somerville & I [2] unite in feeling the greatest regard & friendship for Lady Raffles whose merits give her every claim to your polite attentions, which we have the vanity to think will at least not be diminished when you know how anxious we are to contribute as much as we can to make her visit agreeable, & sure I [3] am that by making you known to our Friend, we are successful at Bonn. I think it may be truly said that Lady Raffles has seen more of Countries the very names of which are scarcely known in Europe than any Lady you ever saw – To you therefore my friend who are so profound a Sanscrit Scholar, I conceive that I am doing what is most acceptable. With Mrs Sʼsʼ best Compts I remain Dear Sir
