  Die Sortimentsbuchhandlung in der Londoner Leadenhall Street nahe der East India Company, mit der sie eng zusammenarbeitete, hieß zunächst Black, Kingsbury, and Parbury, ab 1818 Black, Kingsbury, Parbury and Allen und ab 1822 Kingsbury, Parbury and Allen. Sie wurde wechselnd geleitet von Alexander Black, Thomas Kingsbury, Charles Parbury und William Houghton Allen sowie dessen Söhnen. Der Fokus lag auf Publikationen aus Asien und Indien. Ab 1827 hieß sie nur noch Parbury, Allen and Co. Nach Parburys Tod 1834 wurde die Firma wurde als W. H. Allen & Co. (est. 1835) weitergeführt.

  Henry Thomas Colebrooke war der Sohn des Bankiers Sir George Colebrooke, der im Verwaltungsrat der East India Company tätig war. Er wuchs in London auf und erhielt Privatunterricht. 1782 reiste er nach Indien, um als Schreiber des Civil Service of Bengal zu arbeiten. Ab 1786 fand er eine Anstellung als Steuerbeamter in Tirhut und Nator. In den folgenden achtzehn Jahren, die er in Indien verbrachte, arbeitete Colebrooke als Diplomat und Jurist der East India Company und wirkte ab 1805 als oberster Richter des Appellationsgerichts in Kalkutta.
  Außerdem war er ab 1801 als Professor für Sanskrit am Fort William College in Kalkutta tätig. Er verfasste eine erste Grammatik des Sanskrit, die 1805 erschien. 1814 kehrte er nach England zurück. Hier wirkte er 1823 als Mitbegründer der Asiatic Society of Great Britain, publizierte zahlreiche Aufsätze über das Rechtssystem der Hindu, die indische Literatur, aber auch über die Botanik, Mathematik sowie das Maß- und Münzsystem Indiens. Er stellte der Bibliothek der East India Company seine Sammlung Indischer Handschriften zur Verfügung. Colebrooke gilt als Begründer der Sanskritphilologie.

  AWS schätzte Colebrooke als Indologen. 1823 besuchte AWS Colebrooke in London. John Colebrooke, der Sohn von Henry Thomas, lebte ein Jahr im Bonner Haus Schlegels, um sich auf sein Studium vorzubereiten.
